QUIC vs. TCP in Lossy Networks: Why QUIC-IP Wins

Problem: Modern networks drop and reorder packets - think wireless backhaul, edge sites, moving vehicles, or busy data centers. Classic TCP slows down sharply when that happens. Software QUIC improves some things, but it can still hit CPU limits at high speed.

Result: your 10G link can behave like a 1-2G link when the network isn’t perfect.

What we tested: We compared sustained throughput at 10 Gbps under real “messy network” conditions:

  • SW TCP (iperf3)
  • SW QUIC (MsQuic)
  • Design Gateway QUIC-IP (FPGA IP core)

We measured how performance changes with packet loss and out-of-order delivery, in both half- and full-duplex modes.

Results at a glance

  • QUIC-IP stays fast even when the network isn’t: ~80%+ throughput retained at 10% packet loss (half- and full-duplex)
  • SW TCP and SW QUIC collapse early: dramatic drops with as little as 1-2% loss; SW QUIC also shows CPU bottlenecks
  • Out-of-order stress: QUIC-IP delivers >8 Gbps consistently; software stacks fall far behind

Why QUIC-IP

  • Loss & reordering resilience → predictable throughput when links are noisy
  • Hardware offload → avoids the CPU ceilings that limit software QUIC at 10G+
  • Drop-in acceleration for systems that already use QUIC/TLS stacks at the application layer

Where it fits

  • Remote/edge storage over 10G/25G
  • Industrial, medical, test & measurement networks
  • Automotive/defense comms, satellite/wireless backhaul
  • Any deployment where loss or jitter is a fact of life

Evaluate it yourself

  1. Pick your FPGA platform
  2. Get the free evaluation files
  3. Run the reference design
Use the provided bitstreams/projects to bring up 10G quickly (no custom RTL needed to start)
  4. Test under real conditions
    • Compare against iperf3 (SW TCP) and MsQuic (SW QUIC) at 10 Gbps
    • Introduce controlled loss/out-of-order and watch throughput stay high with QUIC-IP (See our short demo videos for setup and behavior.)
  5. Decide & integrate
Move from eval to production IP; use our docs and support to integrate with your MAC/PHY and application
