New Product Release: AB21-E1PCI — E1.S NVMe Adapter Board for Versal™ and Agilex™
Evaluation Platforms
Design Gateway is pleased to announce the release of the AB21-E1PCI,
a new adapter board designed to connect enterprise-class E1.S (EDSFF) NVMe SSDs directly to the PCIe
slot of high-performance FPGA evaluation boards.
|
Why This Matters for High-End FPGA Designs
|
Enterprise-class E1.S SSDs are the ones with the sustained write endurance,
power-loss protection and capacity that serious recording applications need. AB21-E1PCI is what
lets a Versal™ or Agilex™ board reach them at full Gen5 speed.
| •Enterprise SSDs, not client
SSDs — sustained write performance and endurance that consumer M.2 drives cannot
hold across a full disk |
| •Gen5 bandwidth, actually
measured — 11,200 MB/s sustained write on a Micron E1.S, verified on both
AMD and Altera platforms |
| •Same board, both
vendors — one adapter covers AMD Versal™ HBM VHK158 and Altera® Agilex™ 7
I-Series evaluation |
| •Evaluation starts on day
one — pairs with Design Gateway's NVMe-IP reference designs, so there is no
adapter design cycle in front of your project |
|
|
Same adapter, both demo rigs —
AMD Versal™ HBM VHK158 and Altera® Agilex™ 7 I-Series, each with a Micron E1.S SSD on AB21-E1PCI.

Both demos walk through the hardware setup and the measured write performance —

Measured — 11,200 MB/s, Flat Across the Whole Disk
The NVMe-IP demo detects the Micron E1.S SSD and writes 7,681 GB
in 684 seconds — an average of 11,221 MB/s with an 11,518 MB/s peak. The important
part is the shape of the curve: it is a flat line from the first block to the last,
with no thermal cliff and no SLC-cache collapse. That is what an enterprise E1.S
drive behind a clean Gen5 adapter looks like, and it is the behaviour recording
applications actually depend on.

Development Kits.

Where AB21-E1PCI Fits in High-End FPGA NVMe Systems
Applications where the capture rate is high, the recording never stops, and
the storage has to be enterprise-grade.
|
🛰️
Aerospace & Defense
Mission data recorders and SAR/RF payloads that must write
at full rate for the whole flight, not just the first minute.
|
🎛️
Test & Measurement
Instrument capture at Gen5 speed with deterministic,
repeatable throughput and no host processor in the path.
|
🗄️
Data Center & Storage Prototyping
Evaluate the same E1.S drives your production platform will
ship with, on the FPGA you are designing around.
|

High-Rate Video & Sensor Logging
Multi-camera and dense sensor arrays streamed straight to
enterprise SSD without dropping frames.

The AB Series
One Adapter Family, Every NVMe Form
Factor
AB21-E1PCI completes the line-up. Whichever SSD form factor your application
standardises on, there is a Design Gateway adapter that puts it on the end of a PCIe slot.
